How to do Satyanarayan Puja at Home
Satyanarayana pooja Katha is performed in admiration to Lord Narayan, form of Lord Vishnu. The procedure to perform this is quiet simple. Puja items can be easily arranged at home. Lord Vishnu in this form of Satyanarayan is considered an incarnation of truth. Both in the morning and in the evening, Satyanarayan Puja can be performed. On the particular day of Puja, the devotee should fast and take bath before starting of the Puja. Satyanarayan Puja can be performed on any day but not on the New Moon Day or Amavasya. This Puja is not confined to any festivities. Most auspicious day would be Sankranti or Full Moon day (Purnima) to perform this Puja. Like all other Puja, this Puja starts with a prayer devoted to Lord Ganesha. The other part of the prayer includes a prayer to Navagraha – the nine planets of the universe. The rest of the Puja continues worshipping Satyanarayan, the extreme compassionate and generous form of Lord Vishnu. This follows the recitation of satyanarayana Pooja katha (the story of Satyanarayan). This katha talks about the origin of the Puja, the benefits of Satyanarayan Puja and the trouble and disaster that happens due to lack of devotion. Finally, the prayer of Puja concludes with Pushpanjali and Atari.

A very important ritual for this Puja is to offer Sirni which is a special Prasad prepared by mixing un-boiled milk, wheat flour, smashed bananas, sugar mixed with groundnuts, cashews, cherries and crushed coconuts or fruits. One needs to offer 108 (One Hundred and Eight) Tulsi (Indian Basil) leaves to the lord. A banana tree is also needed as a canopy. In order to make Panchamrita, mixture of milk, yogurt, honey, sugar and ghee is needed. If one wishes to perform Havan (Yagna) then, Sandalwood, Ghee, Honey, Samidha, Wood Apple Sticks etc is required. Conch Shell, Flower garlands, bell, cloth and ghee lamp and oil is also required for Satyanarayan Puja at Home. After completing each Katha, one needs to offer Six coconuts to the lord.
One may also chant – “OM SHRI SATYANARAYANAYA NAMOH” three times during the Puja.
